How to Plan and Book a Masai Mara Kenya Safari in 4 Steps

To plan a Masai Mara Kenya safari, work in this order. Pick your dates first, ideally June to October for dry-season game viewing and the Great Migration. Then decide whether you drive or fly in from Nairobi and whether you travel privately or in a shared vehicle. Next, match a lodge tier to your budget, and finally send an operator your dates, group size and style to get a written quote. Plan at least three nights in the Mara. Private four-day trips start around $990, and flying itineraries start above $2,000.

The hard part is not finding safari to Kenya packages. It is comparing them. One listing offers three days by minibus, another five days with flights, and a third bundles Lake Nakuru and Amboseli. Prices swing widely without explanation, peak months bring queues of vehicles at river crossings, and it is rarely clear what the quoted price includes.

This guide walks through the four decisions that set the shape and cost of a safari in the Masai Mara. It comes from Extra Miles Unique Adventures, a Nairobi-based operator that has designed private East Africa trips since 2007. You will get a month-by-month table, a road versus fly-in comparison, a price table with a worked example, and a quote email you can copy.

What to know before you plan a Mara safari

The Masai Mara is Kenya's best-known game area, in Narok County along the Great Rift Valley, about 5 to 7 hours from Nairobi by road. It is home to the Big Five and large herds of plains game. You can see wildlife here all year, so your choices about timing, transport and lodging matter more than whether the animals are there.

Reserve, Triangle or conservancy

A safari in the Masai Mara usually means one of three areas. The Masai Mara National Reserve is the core protected area. The Mara Triangle is its western section, along the Mara River. The conservancies (Mara North, Naboisho, Olare Orok and Ol Kinyei among them) are community-owned land bordering the reserve. Travelers often pick the Triangle and the conservancies for fewer vehicles at sightings.

Where you stay decides where you game drive, so this choice also shapes your lodge shortlist in Step 3.

Choose the area you want to game drive in first, because your lodge decides which part of the Mara you actually see.

Mara or Serengeti

Travelers often ask which is better, the Serengeti or the Mara. They are one ecosystem split by the Kenya-Tanzania border. The Serengeti is far larger and sits in Tanzania. The Mara is smaller, closer to Nairobi, and easier to pair with Amboseli or Lake Nakuru. The migration herds, roughly 1.5 million wildebeest, move between both. If your trip is short or your flights go through Nairobi, the Mara is usually the practical choice.

Step 1. Choose your travel dates

Choose your dates by deciding whether the migration matters to you. June to October is the dry season and the best window for visibility, because grass is shorter and animals gather near water. The migration river crossings usually fall between July and October. Timing shifts from year to year with the rains.

Month-by-month conditions

Months Conditions What it means for your safari
January to February Dry break between rainy seasons Good viewing, lighter crowds
March to May Long rains, muddy tracks Green and quiet, some camps close
June Dry season begins Herds start arriving, crowds build
July to September Peak dry season Migration crossings, highest demand
October Dry, migration winding down Mid to late October is quieter
November to December Short rains Green scenery, fewer visitors

When to avoid the Mara

Avoid March to May if you want reliable roads and every camp open. Reconsider July to September if crowds bother you. At crossing points, vehicles can line up for the same view, and a crossing lasts only a few minutes. Mid to late October is a good compromise for the migration with fewer vehicles. Dry months also mean fewer mosquitoes, though you should still ask your doctor about malaria prevention.

If you want the migration without the crowds, book mid to late October and book early.

Step 2. Decide how you travel

Choose how you travel by weighing time against money. Driving from Nairobi takes 5 to 7 hours each way and costs less. Flying from Wilson Airport takes about 45 minutes to an hour and saves most of a day. The rest of this step is about group size and trip length.

Road or fly-in

Road Fly-in
Time from Nairobi 5 to 7 hours About 45 minutes to 1 hour
Cost Lower Higher
Best for Trips of 4+ days, budget-conscious travelers Trips of 3 to 4 days, luxury camps
Trade-off Some rough road stretches Luggage limits on small planes

For a trip of three days or fewer, flying effectively gives you an extra game drive day. For a week-long circuit that also visits Amboseli or Lake Naivasha, driving keeps costs down and shows you the countryside.

Private or shared vehicle

A shared vehicle with one guide is the cheapest way in, and it suits travelers for whom lions matter more than comfort. The downside is that the group sets the schedule. A private safari lets you start before dawn, stay at a sighting as long as you like, and wait at a river crossing without negotiating. We would choose a private safari for a couple, family or photographer.

How many nights

Plan three nights in the Mara if you can. Two nights is the minimum, because the first afternoon goes to settling in and the last morning to leaving. Packages that add Lake Nakuru or Amboseli give variety but take game drive time from the Mara.

Three nights in the Mara gives you six game drives, which is enough to give you a real chance at big cats and a crossing.

Step 3. Match your lodge and budget

Match your Masai Mara safari accommodation to your budget by comparing starting prices per night, not per trip. Our private Masai Mara packages start at $990 for four days and reach $2,908 for a six-day fly-in. The table lists them. Prices are starting prices, so what you really pay per person will change with dates, group size and lodge.

To see how the figures compare, divide each four-day starting price by its three nights. The Mara Serena package works out to $330 a night, the Mara and Nakuru package to about $395, and the ultra-luxury flying safari to $690. The gap between the cheapest and the most luxurious four-day trip is $1,080, and it buys flights and more privacy.

What moves the price

Several factors push a quote up or down:

  • Season, with July to October the most expensive.
  • Lodge location, whether inside the reserve, in a conservancy or outside the gate.
  • Flying instead of driving.
  • Number of nights and number of parks.
  • Private versus shared vehicle.
  • Whether park fees, meals and drinks are included.

Top luxury tented camps in the Mara list from roughly $785 to over $1,100 per person per night. Whatever your budget, choose a lodge inside the Mara or close to it, and ideally near a river or a wildlife gathering point. A cheaper lodge a long drive from the gate costs you game drive hours every day.

Compare packages by cost per night and by where the lodge sits, not by the headline total.

Step 4. Request a quote and book

Request a quote by giving an operator the five details that shape an itinerary: dates, group size, parks, travel style and budget. A good operator replies with a written itinerary and price and revises it with you. At Extra Miles we respond to enquiries within 24 hours.

What to send

Copy this into an email, a quote form or WhatsApp and fill in the brackets:

Subject: Masai Mara safari quote request

Hi, I'd like a quote for a private safari in the Masai Mara.

Dates: [month and year, flexible by X days]
Travelers: [number of adults, children and ages]
Trip length: [number of nights]
Parks: [Masai Mara only / plus Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, etc.]
Travel style: [road or fly-in, lodge or tented camp]
Budget: [total or per person, in USD]
Interests: [Big Five, migration crossings, photography, birding]
Departure city: [city]

What to confirm before you pay

Ask the operator to confirm these in writing:

  1. Whether park fees are included.
  2. Airport transfers and the vehicle type, which should be a 4x4 with a pop-up roof.
  3. Meals and drinks included at each lodge.
  4. The names of the lodges, so you can read reviews.
  5. Flight details and luggage limits for fly-in trips.
  6. Cancellation and change terms.

Before you fly

Check that your passport is valid for at least six months, with blank pages. Apply for Kenya entry authorization online through the official Kenyan government portal before you travel, and check current requirements, because they change. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you arrive from a country at risk of transmission. Kenya uses type G outlets, so pack an adapter.

Get the inclusions in writing before you pay, because most quote disputes come from park fees and drinks.

Ready to plan your Mara trip

A good Masai Mara safari comes down to four decisions. Choose dates that match what you want to see, choose road or air, pick a lodge by location and cost per night, and confirm every inclusion before you book. Keep at least three nights in the Mara.

When you are ready, share your dates and travel style with our team and we will send a tailored itinerary and quote for your safari.
