5 Days Hiking Mount Kenya – A High-Altitude Adventure

Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest mountain, lies on the equator and has an equatorial climate. Trek days start clear and warm, with clouds and cooler temperatures by midday and cold nights at altitude, often below 0°C. Vegetation changes with height, from forest and bamboo to moorland, alpine plants, and dry high-altitude zones. The scenic Chogoria Route offers excellent acclimatization and is often combined with a descent via Sirimon.

Pick up Nairobi at 8 am and drive towards the Chogoria region on the eastern side of Mt Kenya, arriving at Chogoria base camp late afternoon, in time for lunch. After lunch, continue driving through the equatorial rain forest for 10KM. Chogoris forest is the home of elephant, cape buffalo, and leopard. You may also be fortunate to see Colobus monkey on our way, dinner/overnight at Chogoria camp, 3000m.

Meal Plan: Lunch & Dinner
Pick up Nairobi at 8 am and drive towards the region of Chogoria, on the eastern side of Mt Kenya, arriving at Chogoria base camp late afternoo,n the time for lunch, then after lunch continue driving through the equatorial rain forest for 10KM. Chogoris forest is the home of elephant, cape buffalo, and leopard. You may also be fortunate to see a Colobus monkey on our way. Dinner/overnight at Chogoria camp 3000m.

The morning is spent traversing the eastern moorlands of Mt Kenya edge of the Nithi Gorge. You will have the picnic lunch overlooking this majestic gorge, above Vivien Falls (named after Vivien De Watteville, swiss huntress turned naturalist). In the afternoon, you will hike up the ridge of the Nithi to our private camp at Hall Tarns at 14,500 feet. The walking distance takes 6 hrs.

Start early to trek 4 hours to Point Lenana, reaching the summit around midday. After enjoying the views, descend along the Sirimon Route, taking in the alpine scenery. Continue to Shipton Camp for dinner and an overnight stay, resting for the next day’s trek.

On the final day, descend through the scenic Mackinders Valley to Old Moses Camp, a trek of about 5 hours. Enjoy lunch at the camp before connecting with your transport back to Nairobi, arriving in the evening after a memorable mountain adventure.
